Almería boosts labor inspections and health staffing for extreme summer heat

In response to rising summer temperatures, Almería’s labour inspection office has created a rapid‑response unit within the regional Inspection of Labour. The team is increasing on‑site visits to workplaces such as greenhouses, retail outlets and rail services to enforce heat‑related safety measures, after a meeting between provincial chief María del Mar Pérez and union spokesperson Antonio Rico highlighted concerns over staff shortages and the need for more resources.

At the same time, the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) has launched a 2026 Summer Plan for Almería, allocating €168 million – a 24.4 % rise over the previous year – to cope with the surge of tourists. The plan adds 41,639 new contracts, including 1,993 doctors, 14,741 nurses and thousands of technical and support staff. Hospital capacity will rise to 12,774 operational beds, with additional reserve beds ready for activation within 24 hours, and 431 operating theatres will remain active. Officials expect over 6.4 million medical contacts between July and September, aiming to prevent health system overload during the heatwave season.
