Almería Fishermen Push for 50 More EU Fishing Days in Spanish PP Plan

Spanish People's Party (PP) Member of the European Parliament Carmen Crespo has presented a proposal in the European Parliament to reform the Mediterranean Multi‑annual Plan. The amendment seeks to restore up to 50 fishing days for the Almería fleet, guaranteeing a minimum of 180 days of activity per vessel each year.

Crespo notes that Almería fishermen have seen their annual fishing days fall from around 230 to about 130 over the past seven years, affecting roughly 200 boats, their income, employment and operating costs. The proposal also calls for limiting annual reductions to no more than 20 % and for reviewing the dual regulation on red shrimp (gamba roja) to better align marine protection with the sector’s profitability.

The PP argues that the new rules should be flexible, based on updated scientific studies, and consider the economic and social impact on the local fishing community.
