More recently, Catalan Agriculture Minister Óscar Ordeig met with European Commission officials in Brussels to advocate for increased permitted fishing days, arguing that Mediterranean shrimp stocks have recovered. Ordeig criticized the ‘double regulation’ system, which imposes both a limit on fishing days and a weight quota, stating that current restrictions prevent fishermen from capitalizing on abundant stocks and cause market price disruptions.

As fishermen in La Ràpita resume trawling following biological ban periods, the sector faces ecological shifts; warming waters are causing declines in traditional species like scampi while introducing new species such as white shrimp from Huelva. The industry is now focused on upcoming European Union decisions in December that will determine fishing days for 2027.
