Alpine challenges FIA penalty over Pierre Gasly's Monaco podium loss
Pierre Gasly crossed the finish line in third place at the Monaco Grand Prix, but a ten‑second time penalty for exceeding the pit‑lane speed limit dropped him to seventh. Alpine lodged two formal requests with the FIA to review the penalty, seeking to have the result and the podium trophy reinstated.
The FIA has scheduled a virtual hearing with the stewards, during which Alpine must present new, material evidence to overturn the sanction. The team argues that the speed‑limit breach was marginal—a difference of only 0.1 km/h to 0.4 km/h—based on average speed calculations between timing loops. Gasly said he was aware of the penalty before the race ended but expressed frustration, calling the outcome a loss of a dream podium after years of effort. Alpine points to a previous successful appeal by Carlos Sainz as a precedent, but such reversals are rare.
The outcome of the hearing could restore Gasly’s third‑place finish and the associated trophy, but the decision remains pending.
