Alpine F1 technical struggles and driver developments
Overview
Alpine F1 has undergone significant technical and personnel shifts during the 2026 season. Early developments included hiring Joseph Grimer and abandoning a novel rear-wing concept to focus on midfield competitiveness. A major controversy arose at the Monaco Grand Prix when a timing-loop error led to the rescinding of pit-lane speeding penalties for Pierre Gasly, restoring his third-place podium finish.
Technically, the team has struggled with aerodynamic instability in the A526 chassis. Leading up to the summer break, Alpine fell to sixth in the Constructors' Championship, trailing Racing Bulls by five points. Ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, Managing Director Steve Nielsen confirmed the introduction of several upgrades intended to help the team secure fifth place in the standings. Nielsen stated, “The plan is simple: bring more as and when we can, and hopefully it will be enough to put us in the on-track fight to score as many points as possible.”
Driver Franco Colapinto has emerged as a central figure. Alpine has officially confirmed that Colapinto will remain a full-time driver through the 2027 season, partnering with Pierre Gasly. This decision follows a strong 2026 campaign in which Colapinto secured 19 points, including a career-best sixth-place finish in Montreal. Executive advisor Flavio Briatore praised Colapinto’s maturity, stating, “Franco belongs to Formula One and belongs to this team.”
At the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Colapinto secured a ninth-place finish, earning two points for Alpine. His race was marked by frustration after a mistake at the Lesmo corners caused him to lose control and drop to 16th place. Additionally, the FIA issued Colapinto a disciplinary reprimand for violating driving regulations during the formation laps by crossing the white line while exiting the pits. Despite the setback, former driver David Coulthard praised Colapinto’s potential.
