Alpine climate conditions raise mountaineering hazards
Low winter snowfall, a warm spring and prolonged heat waves have created an unusually high zero‑degree line in the Alps, reaching 4,000‑5,000 m. The melt of permafrost weakens the “glue” that holds rock together, increasing rockfall and landslides, while ice bridges and snow‑covered crevasses become more likely to collapse. Heavy rain and thunderstorms further raise the risk of mudslides (Muren), and several mountain‑hut approaches are temporarily impassable.
Swiss Alpine Club head Severin Karrer warned that “we have a very unfavorable constellation this year,” and German Alpine Club sport‑development chief Stefan Winter added that climbers are now encountering more blank‑ice passages and larger glacier‑edge cracks. Austrian mountain‑rescue leader Bernd Tritscher said some routes are no longer possible. Experts advise hikers and climbers to use up‑to‑date information, avoid old maps, start tours later and check current conditions before heading into the mountains.
