On the Aiguille du Midi peak, the monthly average temperature for July reached 3.3 C, the highest ever recorded by Meteo France, compared to 1.6 C in 1994. This record heat has severely impacted the permafrost that stabilizes the terrain, making certain climbing routes, including a famously dangerous gully at 4,805 meters, temporarily impassable. Local officials in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc report that glacial retreat and snowmelt are causing crevasses to open, complicating access and traversal. These changes are drawing comparisons to recent catastrophic flooding in the Himalayas, underscoring the growing instability of high-altitude glacial environments.

Rising temperatures are significantly altering glacier conditions, increasing hazards for mountaineers and complicating operations for ski resorts. In the Kaunertal glacier area in Tyrol, operators are using excavators and explosives to level ground exposed by melting ice. While some resorts aim to start operations in late September using snow depots, rising temperatures at altitudes between 2,500 and 3,000 meters are making artificial snow production difficult due to insufficient cold and water availability. Similar dramatic retreats have been noted at the Kitzsteinhorn in Salzburg.
