Central European infrastructure projects advance across DE, AT, and CH

Major infrastructure developments and maintenance projects are underway across Central Europe, impacting rail and road networks in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

In Germany, Deutsche Bahn has completed preliminary planning for the Brenner North Access, a project intended to increase rail capacity between Munich and the Austrian border. Meanwhile, in Dortmund, preparations are intensifying for an eight-month full closure of the A45 motorway in 2027 due to bridge reconstruction, with preliminary road closures scheduled for November 2026.

In Switzerland, BLS has released public plans for the full expansion of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel to a double-track system, a project estimated to cost approximately 1.7 billion Swiss francs. Additionally, road maintenance on the A21 and the Grand-Saint-Bernard route will cause various lane closures and tunnel restrictions through late 2026.

In Austria, economic representatives in Tyrol are calling for the construction of a large freight terminal in Wörgl to accommodate the expected increase in rail traffic following the completion of the Brenner Base Tunnel in 2032.
