Central European infrastructure and transport projects

Central European nations, including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, are managing various large-scale infrastructure developments and maintenance projects.

Initial reports highlight long-term planning and major expansions, such as Deutsche Bahn’s preliminary planning for the Brenner North Access, the proposed 1.7 billion Swiss franc expansion of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel to a double-track system, and calls for a new freight terminal in Wörgl, Austria. Significant upcoming disruptions were also noted, including a planned eight-month closure of Germany’s A45 motorway in 2027.

Subsequent developments focus on immediate and localized traffic disruptions resulting from ongoing works. In Switzerland, these include noise-reduction installations on the A2 motorway in Basel and repairs on the Lehnen Viaduct. In Germany, road closures and lane restrictions are being implemented for resurfacing on the B 286 and B 299, as well as bridge replacement preparations on the A14.

Recent updates indicate continued roadwork impacts. In Switzerland, the A2 motorway in Basel faces weekend restrictions through October for noise-reduction surface installations, while the A2 near Beckenried undergoes traffic shifts and night closures for Lehnen Viaduct repairs. Additionally, new pedestrian crossings have been installed in Zug. In Germany, the B 286 and B 299 remain closed for resurfacing and renovations through late 2026, and the A14 near Schwerin is implementing single-lane traffic for bridge replacement preparations.

Railway developments have also progressed. Deutsche Bahn has proposed electrifying the Bäderbahn in Ostholstein, though local municipalities have expressed disapproval of a plan to create two separate stations in Haffkrug. Meanwhile, SBB has commenced a 70 million Swiss franc upgrade at Siebnen-Wangen station to add a passing track and ensure barrier-free access by 2028, aiming to restore direct S2 connections to Zurich.
