Alpine Rescue Corps issues safety alert for mushroom foragers in Italy

The National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps (Cnsas) has issued an alert following a series of rescue operations in Lombardy, Italy, involving individuals searching for mushrooms. Recent interventions, particularly in the Alta Valsassina region near Alpe Dolcigo, highlight the risks associated with this activity.

Rescuers report that mushroom foragers frequently deviate from marked trails to enter steep, humid, or rugged terrain, often near watercourses. This behavior significantly increases the risk of slips, falls, and disorientation. In certain areas like Crandola Valsassina, Casargo, Premana, and Pagnona, the terrain is particularly difficult to navigate, and poor mobile phone coverage can complicate emergency calls.

To prevent accidents, Cnsas recommends that individuals assess their physical fitness and choose routes compatible with their abilities. Essential safety gear includes boots with good grip and ankle support, long trousers, and brightly colored clothing for visibility. Foragers are also advised to check weather forecasts, carry water, food, a headlamp, and a power bank, and to inform a trusted person of their intended route and expected return time.
