Mushroom foraging regulations and safety in Italy

Overview

The mushroom foraging season in Italy continues to drive regulatory and safety interventions. In Piemonte, foragers are limited to 3 kg per day and must use ventilated containers. Recent 2025 data from the Integrated Surveillance System for Foodborne Diseases reported 30 suspected poisoning or intolerance cases, including six children, all involving mushrooms collected for private consumption. While all affected individuals sought emergency care, no deaths were recorded. This represents a decrease from 2024, which saw 58 involved individuals. To mitigate risks, the region offers free identification services through local health authority (ASL) mycological inspectorates, which handled 1,417 consultations and 1,634 species identifications in 2025.

In Lombardy, regional data from the 2024-2025 biennium shows that over 2,200 inspections resulted in the confiscation of nearly 900 kg of toxic or non-edible mushrooms, alongside 160 recorded poisoning cases. Consequently, regional officials are proposing new legislation to improve prevention and the role of specialized mycologists.

Safety warnings remain a priority. In Rome, police seized over 70 kg of untraceable mushrooms at the Porta Portese market. Guido Mannaioni, president of the Italian Society of Toxicology (Sitox), warned that “ignorance or overconfidence often leads to hospitalizations and fatalities.” In the Varese region, the Prefecture and Alpine and Speleological Rescue teams have released a guide titled ‘Sicuri a cercar funghi’ to promote prevention, advising foragers to avoid steep terrain, check weather forecasts, and carry essential equipment.

Educational and certification initiatives are also expanding. In San Severino Marche, the Unione Montana Potenza Esino Musone is organizing a 21-hour course to prepare citizens for mandatory exams required for legal foraging permits. Similarly, the Università Agraria di Cesano di Roma is providing training on fungal genera like Amanita and Boletaceae.
