Italy wildfires trigger regional emergencies and evacuations
Italy is facing a widespread wildfire emergency across multiple regions, driven by high temperatures, drought, and strong winds. In the Carnia region, fires on Monte Amariana and Marianutte have forced the precautionary evacuation of Pissebus, with flames reaching within 50 meters of homes. Emergency services, including the Vigili del Fuoco, Protezione Civile, and Carabinieri, are utilizing helicopters, Canadairs, and drones to combat the blazes.
In Abruzzo, a major fire on Monte Morrone has necessitated an extraordinary meeting led by Regional President Marco Marsilio to coordinate air and ground responses. The situation there is complicated by difficult terrain and wind currents. Meanwhile, in Emilia-Romagna, nearly 220 hectares of land have been destroyed since early July, prompting an extension of the orange fire alert level.
In other areas, a large fire in Bari's San Paolo district was contained after four hours, and a fire on Monte Goj in Como has shown signs of improvement. Law enforcement has also taken action against arson; in Calabria, a 49-year-old man was arrested after being caught on drone footage setting fire to a wooded area in Mileto.
