Italian Alpine, Fire and Sea Rescue Operations

Entities: Sirente · Italian emergency services · Lombardy fire brigade · Gran Sasso – Corno Piccolo · Maiella

Overview

During the latter half of July 2026 Italy’s emergency services continued a hectic rescue agenda across the Alps, Apennines and Mediterranean coast. Building on the week’s earlier incidents, the Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico (CNSAS) together with 118 helicopter crews responded to a thunderstorm that struck the Bolver Lugli ferrata on the Pale di San Martino, delivering three foreign hikers who suffered lightning‑induced shock to a Trento hospital; one of the hikers sustained a facial contusion. In Abruzzo, separate calls sent teams to Sirente, Maiella and Villalago where hikers with leg injuries or severe dehydration were air‑lifted to local medical facilities. On Gran Sasso’s Corno Piccolo an alpinist who fell about 30 metres was rescued by CNSAS technicians and an air‑ambulance. A lost hiker who had spent a night sheltering in the Valle degli Alberghi near Massa was located by CNSAS and fire‑service teams and extracted safely. On 25 July, an 11‑year‑old girl struck by a falling rock in the Orrido di Botri gorge was air‑lifted by the Pegaso helicopter for medical care. These operations, alongside ongoing wildfire‑related landslide evacuations, maritime rescues of migrants off Levanzo and road‑traffic incidents, underscored the breadth and coordination of Italy’s alpine, fire‑, sea‑ and public‑safety response capabilities in a week marked by extreme weather and multiple emergencies.
