Alpine transit routes face delays due to construction
Major Alpine transit routes are experiencing significant traffic disruptions due to long-term construction projects and localized bottlenecks.
On the Brenner Pass, construction work initiated in early 2025 is expected to continue until 2030, resulting in single-lane traffic in both directions. While authorities may implement two lanes during peak travel periods, travelers should anticipate heavy congestion, particularly during holidays. Potential alternatives include the B182 Brennerstraße, the Reschen Pass, the Tauern motorway, and the Timmelsjoch, though these routes also face risks of overcrowding or closures due to ongoing maintenance and rockfall protection works.
In Switzerland, the Gotthard Road Tunnel is facing delays. Traffic heading south has experienced congestion of up to three kilometers, with wait times reaching approximately 30 minutes. Additionally, construction on the A2 motorway between Wassen and the Gotthard tunnel has caused lane narrowings and traffic disruptions. Work within the tunnel itself is scheduled to continue through late 2028, impacting lane widths for standard and oversized transport.
