German rail punctuality push, Brenner tunnel breakthrough

Entities: European Union · Martin Gradnitzer · Brenner Base Tunnel · Daniel Alfreider · Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT)

Overview

After the Hamburg‑Hannover line reopened on 10 July, the federal government sharpened its focus on train punctuality. Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder warned that reaching the 70 % on‑time target for ICE and Intercity services by the end of 2029 will require both billions of euros for infrastructure and operational improvements, such as more cleaning staff for delayed trains. DB chief Evelyn Palla has asked for an extra €13 billion to meet the goal, while the “generalsanierung” programme is being reviewed for possible adjustments to the pace of line refurbishments.

In Austria, the Mattersburg line is set for a €143 million electrification that will provide fully green‑powered, barrier‑free service by 2027 with new park‑&‑ride facilities.

The Brenner‑Nordzulauf north‑link remains under parliamentary review, with permitting delays cited as a key obstacle.

On 29 July 2026 workers from Austria and Italy linked the two main tubes of the Brenner Base Tunnel, completing excavation of the 230‑km tunnel. The fully bored tunnel is slated to enter service in 2032, shortening Munich‑Verona trips to about 3½ hours and shifting freight from road to rail. While access routes in Bavaria, Tirol and Italy are advanced, the final German routing still awaits Bundestag approval.
