Alpine wolf management updates in Liechtenstein and Switzerland

Authorities in Liechtenstein and Switzerland are implementing new measures to manage growing wolf populations in the Alpine region. The Liechtenstein government has decided to evaluate and revise its “Concept Wolf Liechtenstein” to account for developments in regional wolf populations and management practices in neighboring countries. This revision follows the confirmed formation of the cross-border “Falknis” wolf pack in August 2026. The evaluation aims to clarify Liechtenstein’s role within the Alpine wolf population and explore adjustments to prevent damage to livestock.

In Switzerland, the canton of Graubünden has received full approval from the Federal Office for the Environment to continue proactive wolf regulation. Effective September 1, 2026, authorities are permitted to preventatively remove up to two-thirds of confirmed young wolves in specific packs to mitigate potential damage to livestock. Additionally, the canton has requested the complete removal of the Calderas pack in Middle Graubünden due to repeated attacks on protected herds. These measures are part of an ongoing strategy to minimize conflicts between wolves and livestock farming through proactive regulation and improved herd protection.
