Alps and Italy face severe climate impacts from 2026 heat and drought

The summer of 2026 has been characterized by extreme weather and rapid climate shifts in the Alps and Italy. According to Legambiente’s ‘Carovana dei ghiacciai’, the Alpine glaciers are facing severe instability due to high temperatures and a zero-degree isotherm remaining consistently above 4,800–5,000 meters. This has led to significant glacier retreat and increased debris flows, with notable collapses observed at Monviso and Montasio.

In Italy, climate analysis from Radarmeteo/Hypermeteo indicates that while the 2026 drought may not be the most intense of the century compared to 2003 or 2022, it is distinguished by its sudden acceleration. The rapid increase in temperature and evapotranspiration has caused a swift transition into severe water stress, increasing the vulnerability of the agricultural sector. This sudden shift poses risks to crop planning and local water management.
