France faces severe water crisis as drought affects millions

France is facing a severe water crisis following an exceptionally hot summer and minimal rainfall. As of late September, the Ministry of Ecological Transition reported that 94,000 people in metropolitan France were subject to emergency drinking water supply measures, an increase of 30,000 since the start of the month. Additionally, approximately 6.4 million residents are under a water distribution vigilance status due to resource fragility.

Regional impacts are widespread. In Alsace, approximately 250,000 people in the Bruche-Mossig-Ehn-Andlau-Giessen-Liepvrette basin are facing water restrictions. In the Doubs department, authorities have moved to partially close the Saint-Point dam valve to secure drinking water reserves. In the Manche department, despite recent rainfall, groundwater levels remain critically low.

In overseas territories, the situation is even more acute. Guadeloupe has dealt with a dual crisis involving drought-induced shortages and pollution of bathing sites due to sanitation degradation.
