Overview

By late 2026, France continued to manage the economic and logistical fallout of a record-breaking summer of heat and drought. By early October, the Bureau de recherches géologiques et minières (BRGM) reported that 66% of monitoring points were below seasonal norms, with 81% of levels continuing to decline. The French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) noted that nearly half of the country’s small watercourses (49.6%) have experienced a total loss of flow, the most severe situation since 2012.

Restrictions have expanded to include prohibitions on washing vehicles, filling private pools, and even watering cemetery plants. In some departments, such as Finistère, officials have warned of imminent drinking water cutoffs. While some areas like Sarthe have seen minor relief due to recent rainfall, many regions, including Saône-et-Loire and Côte-d'Or, remain in crisis or alert status. To build long-term resilience, the Ministry of Agriculture has allocated 14 million euros to hydraulic projects in Occitanie, part of a larger 60 million euro national fund.
