Trenitalia unveils Intercity 200 and new Italy-Germany rail links
At the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin, Trenitalia and Alstom presented the new Intercity 200, a train capable of reaching speeds of 200 km/h. This project is part of a 500 million euro investment, funded by the PNRR, to acquire 38 new Intercity trains. The new models are designed for sustainability, being up to 94% recyclable and reducing energy consumption by 30% compared to previous models.
Trenitalia also announced a major international expansion in collaboration with Deutsche Bahn and ÖBB. Starting in summer 2027, new Frecciarossa high-speed services will connect Milan and Rome to Munich. The Munich–Milan route is expected to take approximately 6.5 hours, while the Munich–Rome route will take about 8.5 hours. By December 2028, these services are planned to extend further to Naples and Berlin.
Additionally, Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO of FS Italiane, outlined a five-year industrial plan valued at approximately 100 billion euros. The strategy focuses on returning to the group's railway core business, prioritizing infrastructure, safety, and service quality. Strisciuglio also confirmed that ticket prices will remain frozen despite rising energy costs.
