Trenitalia rail network modernization

At the InnoTrans 2026 trade fair in Berlin, further details were provided regarding the Etr 108 model, which is developed using the Coradia Stream platform and manufactured entirely in Italy. These trains are designed for speeds of 200 km/h, feature 403 seats, and include low-floor access, dedicated spaces for bicycles, and family areas. The models are up to 94% recyclable and aim to reduce energy consumption by 30% compared to previous generations. The rollout is intended to address infrastructural gaps, specifically benefiting non-electrified lines and the Central-Southern regions of Italy, including Tuscany, Lazio, and Umbria.

At the InnoTrans trade fair, FS Italiane Group CEO Gianpiero Strisciuglio announced a massive five-year industrial plan estimated at approximately 100 billion euros. This strategy focuses on returning to the group’s railway core business, prioritizing infrastructure, safety, and service quality while maintaining current ticket prices.

Regarding international expansion, Trenitalia, in collaboration with Deutsche Bahn and ÖBB, will launch new international Frecciarossa high-speed connections in the summer of 2027. These routes will link Milan and Rome to Munich, with expected travel times of 6.5 hours and 8.5 hours respectively. Potential extensions to Naples and Berlin are planned by December 2028.
