Alstom and Trenitalia unveil new Intercity 200 trains

Alstom and Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) have officially presented the Intercity 200, a new flagship train designed for medium and long-distance travel. The unveiling took place at the InnoTrans 2026 international transport technology fair in Berlin.

Developed by Alstom for Trenitalia using the Coradia Stream platform, the Etr 108 model is designed and manufactured entirely in Italy. The train features 403 seats (66 in first class and 337 in second class), low-floor access for mobility-impaired passengers, and dedicated spaces for bicycles and families. It is designed for journeys lasting up to six hours and can reach speeds of 200 km/h.

The project is part of a 500 million euro investment by Trenitalia, supported by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The initiative aims to improve territorial equity by connecting less-served areas, particularly in Central and Southern Italy, including regions such as Tuscany, Lazio, and Umbria.

Technologically, the Intercity 200 incorporates the ERTMS signaling system and predictive maintenance tools. Alstom reports that the train can be recycled up to 94 percent and offers energy consumption reductions of up to 30 percent compared to previous models.
