Alstom electric trains to begin service in Bulgaria this September

Bulgaria is set to introduce its first new Alstom electric trains in early September, marking the first major update to the country's railway rolling stock in 20 years. The deployment is part of a larger order for 35 Coradia Stream train sets.

Currently, 12 of the 35 units have been delivered to Bulgaria, with the remaining 23 expected to be ready by April 2027. The first two trains will begin regular service on the Pernik – Sofia – Plovdiv – Svilengrad route, a line capable of supporting speeds up to 160 km/h.

Each train set features six cars, 325 seats, air conditioning, and specialized spaces for bicycles and strollers. The new fleet is designed for interregional travel of up to five hours and includes low-floor construction to assist passengers with reduced mobility. Maintenance will be managed by Alstom in partnership with the Bulgarian company RVP Invest, utilizing a depot in Plovdiv and a second facility currently under construction in Sofia.
