Bulgarian railway modernization program

Overview

Bulgaria is undergoing a significant modernization of its railway network, marking its most substantial update in over two decades.

In mid-August, the country began a phased rollout of 20 zero-emission Skoda electric multiple units. These initial units, funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, are intended for shorter routes such as Sofia–Plovdiv and Sofia–Vidin. The total investment for new rolling stock is expected to exceed 400 million euros.

Following this rollout, the deployment will expand in September with the introduction of Alstom Coradia Stream train sets. While 12 of the 35 ordered units have been delivered, the first two are scheduled to begin regular service on the Pernik–Sofia–Plovdiv–Svilengrad route. Maintenance for these Alstom trains will be handled through a partnership between Alstom and RVP Invest, utilizing facilities in Plovdiv and Sofia.
