Alstom secures €1.03 billion rail contract in Portugal

Alstom has secured a contract worth approximately €1.03 billion with Comboios de Portugal to provide 153 Adessia Stream electric trains. This project, described as one of the most significant rail equipment investments in Portugal's history, aims to modernize regional and suburban rail services in Lisbon, Porto, and Cascais.

The order follows an initial contract for 117 units signed in October 2025, which was expanded by 36 additional trains in March 2026. The new fleet will include 98 trains for suburban networks and 55 for regional lines. Each three-car train is designed to carry up to 450 passengers and features level-entry platforms, Wi-Fi, climate control, and dedicated spaces for wheelchairs and bicycles.

To support the project, Alstom will build a 20,000-square-meter factory in Matosinhos, near Porto, in partnership with the Portuguese company DST. The facility is expected to create nearly 300 direct jobs. The first trains are scheduled to enter service by 2029, with a full rollout expected by 2031. The vehicles are designed with a lifespan exceeding 30 years and a recyclability rate of over 95%.
