Alstom rail infrastructure contracts

Overview

Alstom has secured several large-scale rail contracts across Europe and North America. In Portugal, the company signed a €1.03 billion agreement with Comboios de Portugal to provide 153 Adessia Stream electric trains for regional and suburban services in Lisbon, Porto, and Cascais. This project includes the construction of a 20,000-square-meter factory in Matosinhos to support production.

In North America, Alstom finalized a major agreement with VIA Rail Canada valued at approximately 4.7 billion Canadian dollars (CAD). This contract includes roughly 4 billion CAD for the manufacturing of 313 Adessia passenger cars and nearly 700 million CAD for a 15-year technical support and spare parts agreement. The new fleet is intended to replace equipment that has been in service for up to 80 years, serving eight major national lines and connecting nearly 400 communities, including Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Halifax. The cars will feature various configurations, such as economy, sleeper, panoramic, dome, and dining cars. Production will be distributed across Canadian facilities: design and engineering in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec; car body manufacturing in La Pocatière, Quebec; and final assembly in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2031, with completion by 2035.

Additionally, Alstom’s Belfort site in France has been selected to produce a new range of shunting locomotives. These engines, designed for short-distance wagon repositioning in freight yards, ports, and industrial sites, aim to address the aging European locomotive fleet and support European Union decarbonization goals.
