Alstom to manufacture eight new trains for South Africa’s Gautrain

Alstom has been named as a strategic industrial partner in the Sihamba Sonke Mobility (SSM) consortium, which won a 15-year concession renewal for South Africa’s Gautrain rapid rail system. The project involves an estimated investment of €800 million to modernize the commuter line in Gauteng.

As part of the contract, Alstom will manufacture eight new four-carriage trains, increasing the total fleet from 24 to 32 units. The scope of work extends beyond rolling stock to include upgrades for signaling, communication, and maintenance systems, as well as the refurbishment of existing trains.

The new fleet will be produced domestically at the Alstom Ubunye facility located in Gauteng. This local manufacturing approach is intended to support job creation and ensure efficient maintenance. Alstom expects to record the order in the second quarter of the 2026/27 fiscal year.
