South Africa Gautrain modernization and concession
Overview
The Sihamba Sonke Mobility (SSM) consortium has secured a 15-year concession to operate South Africa’s Gautrain transit network, a public-private partnership running from 2026 through 2041. The deal was facilitated through African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM) via its IDEAS Managed Fund, in a joint venture with Motseng Investment Holdings.
As part of an approximately 800 million euro modernization program, Alstom will serve as a strategic industrial partner. The initiative includes upgrading digital signaling, communication, and maintenance systems. Additionally, Alstom will manufacture eight new four-carriage trains at its Ubunye facility in Gauteng, increasing the total fleet from 24 to 32 units. This local manufacturing is intended to support domestic skills development, job creation, and efficient maintenance.
