Alta Banka faces bankruptcy and license revocation in Serbia

The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) has revoked the operating license of Alta Banka AD Beograd, leading to the initiation of bankruptcy proceedings by the Commercial Court in Belgrade on November 3, 2026. Following the revocation, the Belgrade Stock Exchange suspended the bank's access to its trading system to protect market participants and investors.

The Deposit Insurance Agency (AOD) has been appointed as the bankruptcy administrator. Insured deposits are capped at 50,000 euros per depositor, with payouts scheduled to begin on November 13, 2026, through Banka Poštanska štedionica. Small investors may submit claims for protected holdings of up to 20,000 euros in dinar equivalent until May 3, 2027.

In a related action, the NBS revoked the license of the Alta Group exchange office and imposed a fine of 250 million dinars (approximately 2.1 million euros) due to alleged violations of foreign exchange regulations and anti-money laundering laws. The NBS stated that findings will be forwarded to the Public Prosecutor for Organized Crime.

Local governments, including the cities of Vranje and Leskovac, have reported concerns regarding municipal funds held in overnight deposits at the bank. Meanwhile, the NBS has assured the public that the Serbian banking sector remains stable and liquid, noting that foreign exchange reserves are being used to maintain the dinar's exchange rate.
