Alta Irpinia protesters denounce wind energy expansion

Protesters and local officials in Alta Irpinia are denouncing what they term “wild” wind energy speculation in the Campania region. During a visit to Calitri by Regional President Roberto Fico, members of the Communist Refoundation Party (PRC) and mayors from Morra De Sanctis, Calitri, and Torella dei Lombardi protested against the environmental and economic impact of large-scale renewable energy installations.

According to data provided by PRC Irpinia, the area currently hosts 420 large wind turbines and 150 small ones, producing approximately 650 MW. Plans are underway for an additional 130 turbines to reach 700 MW. The infrastructure expansion includes high-capacity power lines, 200 hectares of photovoltaic panels on agricultural land, and 12 battery energy storage systems (BESS) awaiting authorization.

While President Fico has not issued a formal public stance, he held a private meeting with committee representatives where he promised to establish a technical-political committee to address the concerns of local territories.
