Italian protests against wind energy expansion

Overview

Protests against wind energy infrastructure have emerged in different Italian regions. In Sardinia, the Sa Bardiania de sa Nurra group is protesting the Alas wind farm project, alleging that the construction of ten turbines is irreversibly altering the landscape and destroying ancient cork oak forests.

In the Campania region, specifically Alta Irpinia, protesters and local officials are denouncing what they describe as “wild” wind energy speculation. Local leaders and the Communist Refoundation Party have raised concerns regarding the environmental and economic impacts of large-scale renewable energy installations, noting that the area already hosts hundreds of turbines and is planning further expansion. In response to these local concerns, Regional President Roberto Fico has promised to establish a technical-political committee to address the issues raised by the territory.
