Italy faces widespread wildfire risks and environmental alarms

Italy is facing a surge in wildfires and associated environmental risks. In Puglia, the Alta Murgia National Park has suffered significant damage, with nearly 8,000 hectares burned since June. Geologists warn that the loss of vegetation significantly increases the risk of landslides, debris flows, and floods during upcoming autumn rains.

In Tuscany, authorities have extended the absolute ban on burning agricultural and forest residues until September 13 due to high temperatures and dry conditions. This measure aims to mitigate the risk of new outbreaks during the peak summer period.

Other regional incidents include fires near photovoltaic plants in Giave, Sardinia, and significant blazes in the Amalfi Coast and near Rome, which have caused traffic disruptions on major roads like the Pontina. In Friuli Venezia Giulia, animal welfare associations have called for a suspension of hunting in areas recently devastated by fire to protect stressed wildlife.
