2026 Italy wildfire season – September 10 update

Overview

The 2026 Italian wildfire season has intensified due to record heat and drought, with WWF Italia reporting approximately 70,000 hectares burned—a 133% increase over the twenty-year average. Nearly one-third of these fires have impacted protected areas.

In Sicily, regional authorities have declared a state of crisis following widespread wildfires and heatwaves. Since the start of the year, more than 6,000 fires have been recorded, destroying over 47,000 hectares and causing an estimated 600 million euros in damages. Ongoing firefighting efforts are concentrated in provinces such as Catania, Trapani, Caltanissetta, and Ragusa, where fires near the Condorelli factory have caused significant concern.

In Puglia, the situation has escalated with over 12,600 hectares destroyed, primarily in the Alta Murgia area across Gravina, Altamura, and Minervino Murge. Coldiretti Puglia reported heavy economic losses for agricultural businesses and has called for improved monitoring and EU aid exemptions for affected farmers.

In the Monti Lattari and Cilento regions, multiple fires have prompted large-scale responses involving aerial assets. In Monti Lattari, investigators are examining the possibility of a coordinated arson attack due to the simultaneous ignition of multiple fronts. In Cilento, fires destroyed hectares of Mediterranean vegetation near residential areas.

Other regional impacts include significant fires in Sardinia and the Amalfi Coast. In Campania, a large fire at a waste storage site in the Airola industrial area has sparked community anger. In Tuscany, authorities have extended a ban on burning agricultural residues until September 13. Meanwhile, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, animal welfare associations have called for a suspension of hunting in fire-devastated areas.
