2026 Italy wildfire season – July 23 update
Entities: Peschici · Vieste · Maratea · Gargano · Luigi D'Arenzo
Overview
The July wildfire surge in Italy continued to expand both in scale and impact. Over 1,000 blazes have been recorded since early July, with the most severe fronts in Calabria, Sicily, Puglia, Tuscany and Abruzzo. In Sicily, a fire destroyed the entire olive crop at the Barbaccia farm and forced the evacuation of more than 100 residents, while a second blaze near Agrigento prompted additional evacuations. Puglia saw 732 ha of wheat fields and the breeding grounds of the endangered Altamurana sheep burned. The death of 59‑year‑old firefighter Alessandro Marchì, who collapsed while fighting a blaze near San Cataldo, marked the season’s first fatality and intensified calls for better equipment and working conditions.
Emergency response efforts remain extensive: dozens of fire crews, volunteer units, the Italian Civil Protection, the Forest Service and multiple Canadair aircraft are deployed nationwide. A metal‑recycling plant fire in Monte San Savino (Tuscany) was contained within half an hour, prompting an asbestos‑risk roof inspection. In Abruzzo, the Rocca di Mezzo fire threatened residential buildings and hotels but was kept under control by civil‑protection teams.
Volunteers and aerial assets proved pivotal in extinguishing multi‑day fires in Papasidero (Calabria) and Santa Palomba (Lazio), both suspected to be deliberate. Authorities estimate roughly 60 % of the fires are arson‑linked and stress the need for stronger land‑management policies, coordinated preventive measures and increased resources as the Mediterranean region faces simultaneous strain on firefighting capacities.
