Portugal reports high tap water safety amid environmental health warnings
Portugal continues to face diverse regional and environmental challenges. According to the Water and Waste Services Regulation Authority (ERSAR), tap water safety in mainland Portugal has remained at nearly 100% for 11 consecutive years, with a 2025 safety indicator of 98.84%. While upstream water quality is high at 99.69%, some issues persist in downstream distribution and smaller systems.
Environmental health remains a critical concern. The Portuguese Observatory of Health and Environment (CPSA) reports that while greenhouse gas emissions have decreased, extreme heat and pollution continue to cause significant mortality. The report estimates that extreme heat could be associated with 2,009 excess deaths in 2025, while air pollution caused approximately 4,710 deaths in 2023.
In other sectors, the Alentejo region is seeing shifts in administrative power, with the CCDR Alentejo now authorized to recognize public interest for interventions in National Ecological Reserves. Meanwhile, the Algarve 2030 program is supporting social housing projects across seven municipalities with investments exceeding 105 million euros. In the labor sector, workers at the Faurecia/Forvia automotive component factory in Bragança have announced a strike to demand higher wages and better transport subsidies.
