Alentejo wildfire prevention and civil protection

Overview

Authorities in the Alentejo region of Portugal have launched new initiatives to strengthen civil protection and wildfire management in response to climate change risks.

The Alentejo Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) announced a 3.58 million euro competition to fund investments in prevention, monitoring, and disaster response. This funding is intended to increase the operational capacity of municipalities, fire departments, and humanitarian associations through infrastructure and risk management planning.

Additionally, the Intermunicipal Community of Alto Alentejo (CIMAA) has initiated a public tender for approximately 637,430 euros to expand its forest fire video surveillance system. The project involves deploying fixed towers, mobile towers, and a drone equipped with visible and infrared detection technology across several municipalities, including Nisa, Gavião, Crato, Ponte de Sor, and Alter do Chão. This surveillance data will be coordinated with the National Republican Guard (GNR) to facilitate earlier detection of smoke and heat sources.
