Alto Mirim community to transfer from Chopinzinho to São João

Voters in the Brazilian state of Paraná have approved the transfer of the Alto Mirim community from the municipality of Chopinzinho to São João. In a plebiscite held alongside the second round of the 2026 presidential elections, 86.93% of valid votes favored the separation and transfer.

The decision follows an agreement between the two municipal governments. Although the community currently belongs to Chopinzinho, it is geographically closer to São João, where residents already utilize the majority of public services. A municipal feasibility study concluded that the transfer would not result in negative social, administrative, tax, or financial impacts for either municipality.

According to the Regional Electoral Court of Paraná (TRE-PR), this marks the first time in Brazil that a municipal boundary change of this nature has been decided via electronic voting machines. Out of 26,038 eligible voters, 21,651 participated, resulting in an 83.15% turnout.
