Alto Mirim community municipal transfer plebiscite
Overview
Residents of the Alto Mirim community in the Brazilian state of Paraná participated in a plebiscite to decide whether to transfer the territory from the municipality of Chopinzinho to São João.
The community is geographically closer to São João, where residents already access most essential public services. A technical feasibility study indicated that the transfer would serve the public interest without causing negative social, administrative, or financial impacts for either municipality.
Following the vote, held during the second round of the 2026 presidential elections, 86.93% of valid votes favored the transfer. With an 83.15% turnout, the Regional Electoral Court of Paraná (TRE-PR) noted this as the first time in Brazil that a municipal boundary change was decided via electronic voting machines.
