Po River drought forces water rationing and lake crisis in Italy
A severe drought is gripping northern Italy, driving the Po River’s flow to historic lows and causing lake levels to plunge to just 5‑7 % of their normal capacity. Over 100 municipalities in the Po basin have been placed under water‑rationing orders, and the river’s discharge in Emilia‑Romagna fell to 246 m³/s, well below the critical threshold of 450 m³/s.
Alto Trevigiano Servizi has raised groundwater extraction to its maximum capacity, while the water utility Como Acqua warned that temporary, targeted rationing may become necessary in several comuni of the Como province. The consumer association Codacons has formally requested data on Lake Como’s level and water‑resource management from regional and prefectural authorities.
The drought has also triggered ecological impacts: green algae and cyanobacterial blooms have been observed in the Po, posing health risks, and more than 60 % of Italy’s territory is now classified as drought‑affected, prompting calls for a national reservoir plan.
