AlUla becomes a vital habitat for endangered vulture species

AlUla has emerged as a significant habitat for various vulture species and migratory birds due to its diverse terrain. Field monitoring and scientific studies in the region have documented the presence of several endangered species, highlighting the area's importance for biodiversity.

In the Sharaan Nature Reserve, which covers over 1,500 square kilometers, environmental monitoring teams recorded the rare appearance of the endangered Ruppell's vulture, marking only the second official documentation of this species in AlUla. Additionally, between 20 and 30 Lappet-faced vultures have been regularly recorded in the area, representing approximately 2.5% of the national population, including four breeding pairs during the current season.

To support conservation efforts, the Royal Commission for AlUla has partnered with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to launch a GPS tracking program for the Lappet-faced vulture. This initiative aims to collect precise data on movement, behavior, and potential threats to inform environmental policies and habitat restoration efforts.
