Vulture conservation efforts in Saudi Arabia

Overview

AlUla has been identified as a critical habitat for various migratory birds and endangered vulture species. In the Sharaan Nature Reserve, monitoring teams documented the rare appearance of the endangered Ruppell’s vulture and recorded approximately 20 to 30 Lappet-faced vultures, which accounts for roughly 2.5% of the national population.

To bolster conservation, the Royal Commission for AlUla partnered with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology to implement a GPS tracking program for Lappet-faced vultures.

Expanding on these regional efforts, the National Center for Wildlife launched Saudi Arabia’s first national guidelines for vulture feeding stations. Developed with international organizations, these guidelines establish a framework for managing ‘vulture restaurants’ to provide safe food sources and mitigate the risk of poisoning for both resident and migratory species.
