Lithuania marks start of new school year with infrastructure and policy updates

Lithuania marks the start of the new school year with various regional and national developments. Education Minister Raminta Popovienė emphasized building safe, respectful communities and focusing on trust in schools and respect for teachers, noting that no major reforms are planned for this year.

Across the country, significant investments are being made in educational infrastructure. In Panevėžys district, millions of euros are being utilized for renovations and modern equipment, while Alytus district schools have undergone extensive modernization of facilities like gyms and dining halls. Vilnius district has also enhanced student transport by providing 10 new school buses worth nearly 859,000 euros.

Regional updates include the removal of the PUPP achievement threshold in Telšiai district and curriculum adjustments in several subjects to reduce redundant content. Meanwhile, the community in Alytus is participating in the ‘Lietuvos saga’ initiative to elect local historical and contemporary figures. However, some controversy has emerged regarding the Ministry's decision to split spring holidays by age group for the 2026–2027 school year, causing logistical concerns for families.
