Lithuania school year begins with infrastructure and policy
Overview
The Lithuanian school year has commenced with a focus on infrastructure modernization, community building, and regional developments. Education, Science and Sport Minister Raminta Popovienė has reiterated that no major educational reforms are planned for this year, emphasizing instead the importance of fostering trust, respect for teachers, and safe school environments.
Infrastructure investments continue to expand across various districts. In Panevėžys, millions of euros are being utilized for renovations and modern equipment, while Alytus district schools have seen extensive modernization of facilities such as dining halls and gyms. In the Vilnius district, student transport has been enhanced through the provision of 10 new school buses valued at nearly 859,000 euros.
Regional academic and curricular updates include the removal of the PUPP achievement threshold in the Telšiai district and adjustments to several subjects intended to reduce redundant content. In Skuodas, the Bartuva Gymnasium hosted an educational conference titled ‘2026–2027 school year: change’, which featured insights from the minister. However, local concerns have emerged regarding proposed changes to the Knowledge and Understanding (KET) curriculum, with sports instructors expressing apprehension about the potential impact on children.
Logistical challenges also persist, as a Ministry decision to split spring holidays by age group for the 2026–2027 school year has sparked controversy and raised scheduling concerns for families.
