Alzheimer's research links glucosamine and oral bacteria to disease progression
Recent scientific studies have identified potential links between external factors and the progression of Alzheimer's disease. One study published in Nature Metabolism suggests that glucosamine, a common supplement for joint pain, may exacerbate cognitive decline in individuals already suffering from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia. Researchers at the University of Florida found that glucosamine use was associated with a 25% higher probability of progressing from MCI to dementia, as well as an increased risk of death within 10 years for those already diagnosed with dementia.
Separately, research led by microbiologist Jan Potempa at the University of Louisville explores the hypothesis that Alzheimer's may be linked to oral infections. Scientists identified the presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a bacterium responsible for periodontal disease, in the brains of deceased Alzheimer's patients. Experiments on mice showed that oral infection with this bacterium led to brain colonization and an increase in beta-amyloid proteins, which are characteristic of the disease.
