Alzheimer's disease progression research

Overview

Research published in Nature Metabolism has identified a potential link between glucosamine supplement use and the acceleration of Alzheimer’s disease. A retrospective study by University of Florida researchers, analyzing health records from 2012 to 2024, found that older adults with mild cognitive impairment who used the supplement had a 25% higher likelihood of progressing to dementia. Additionally, among those already diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, glucosamine use was associated with a 25% increase in mortality risk.

Further research has expanded the investigation into external factors affecting disease progression. Microbiologists at the University of Louisville have explored the connection between oral infections and Alzheimer’s, identifying the bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis—associated with periodontal disease—in the brains of deceased patients. Laboratory experiments on mice indicated that oral infection with this bacterium can lead to brain colonization and an increase in beta-amyloid proteins.
