AMAFORE warns of pension risks due to Mexico's aging population

Guillermo Zamarripa, president of the Mexican Association of Retirement Fund Administrators (AMAFORE), has expressed concern regarding the challenges facing Mexico’s pension system. These concerns follow the 2025 Intercensal Survey by INEGI, which indicates an aging population with an average age of 32 years.

Zamarripa highlighted that high labor informality, an aging population, and increased life expectancy will impact the national economy and the retirement savings system (SAR). He noted that the demographic shift is already underway and will intensify over the next two decades.

Regarding potential solutions, Zamarripa dismissed increasing the retirement age as a primary fix. He argued that if employability begins to decline around age 55, raising the retirement age could exacerbate existing socioeconomic problems rather than solving them.
