Amalfi Coast bus ban sparks tourism industry backlash

A provincial ordinance in Salerno will prohibit all vehicles over 5 tonnes, including tourist and public‑service buses, on the former SR 373 road of the Amalfi Coast starting 13 July. Local mayors, regional transport officials and mobility agency representatives met in a technical table, saying the measure is insufficient and requesting a revision that does not unduly penalise residents, tourists and local businesses.

The business association Confesercenti Campania, joined by Federnoleggio, denounced the ban as “totally unacceptable”, warning that it will severely damage the tourism sector during the peak summer season, affect hotels, travel agencies, guides and restaurants, and undermine the region’s promotional efforts. The groups called for an immediate review of the ordinance and a technical dialogue with authorities to find alternatives that balance road safety with economic needs.
