Italy coastal safety, tourism & sustainability
Entities: Region of Liguria · Sant'Erasmo · Italian Rescue Dogs Society (SICS) · Reggio Calabria Airport · Lamezia Terme Airport
Overview
The summer of 2026 kept Italy’s coasts in focus as safety, tourism and regional cooperation unfolded together. A tragic pool accident in Sestri Levante on 14‑15 July, in which 11‑year‑old Alice Ferrari died, triggered a manslaughter investigation into suction‑pipe safety, missing signage and supervision rules. Managers Daniele Muzio and Anna Copello were placed under probe and an autopsy ordered; the family consented to organ donation. World Drowning Prevention Day on 25 July was marked at Senigallia’s Maitai Beach by a Red Cross‑run event featuring sea‑rescue demonstrations, interactive workshops for children and brief first‑aid lessons, supported by the municipality and local safety bodies. Tourism developments accelerated. In March, Italy’s Unified Conference Agreement revised the national tourism classification, adding innovative categories such as bed‑boats, floating lodgings and tree‑houses, obliging regions to update licences, health standards and taxes. The new Scalea‑Maratea airport, named on 18 July, is slated to open in January 2027 to boost the Alto Tirreno area. Cultural and culinary tourism received a boost in Cilento, where the Gusto Italia fair (23 July‑2 August) showcased regional food and crafts, and the newly founded Cilento History Tour launched itineraries to UNESCO sites like Paestum and Velia, ending with a seaside dinner. Calabria’s beaches gained recognition: a Holidu ranking placed Arcomagno (8th) and Rotonda (20th) among Italy’s top‑30, while 27 Blue Flag certifications – second only to Liguria – reflected new flag‑bearing towns such as Amendolara, Montegiordano, Falerna and Locriche, driving a surge in all‑inclusive bookings.
