Amalfi Coast faces emergency vehicle delays due to traffic
The Amalfi Coast is facing a critical logistical crisis due to chronic traffic congestion on the SS 163 highway. Recent incidents have highlighted the danger of this paralysis, including an ambulance becoming trapped in heavy traffic between Castiglione di Ravello and Minori. The bottleneck is particularly severe near the Costa d’Amalfi hospital in Castiglione di Ravello, where narrow roads and high volumes of tourist buses and vehicles create life-threatening delays for emergency services.
In contrast to the road congestion, the region offers seasonal hiking opportunities in the Valle delle Ferriere. During mid-October, the trail from Scala to Amalfi provides a cooler alternative to the crowded beaches, featuring waterfalls, rare ferns, and historical paper mill ruins. While the coastal roads remain busy, the inland paths offer a way to experience the area through slow tourism, though hikers are advised to remain cautious of slippery conditions following rainfall.
