AMANC Veracruz reports rise in infant cancer cases

Susana Lara García, president of the Mexican Association to Help Children with Cancer (AMANC) in Veracruz, reported an increase in pediatric cancer cases among infants as young as four to eight months old. Between 2025 and early 2026, the organization has recorded approximately 10 cases involving very young children with tumors in organs such as the brain, liver, and kidneys.

Lara García addressed concerns regarding potential shortages of oncological medications at the Torre Pediátrica de Veracruz, stating that the organization has received no reports of such shortages from patients. She emphasized that the hospital is a national reference unit for pediatric care and maintains strict oversight of its medical supplies.

A significant challenge identified is the delay in diagnosis, which can take up to a month and a half, hindering the start of specialized treatment. AMANC has urged parents to monitor symptoms such as persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, abdominal swelling, and unusual paleness, stressing that early medical intervention is critical as these diseases can progress rapidly.
