Pediatric cancer challenges and support in Mexico

The Mexican Association to Help Children with Cancer (AMANC) has highlighted both medical challenges and community support efforts regarding pediatric oncology in Mexico.

In Veracruz, AMANC reported a rise in cancer cases among infants as young as four to eight months old between 2025 and early 2026. Susana Lara García, president of AMANC Veracruz, noted that approximately 10 cases involved tumors in organs such as the brain, liver, and kidneys. While no medication shortages have been reported at the Torre Pediátrica de Veracruz, officials identified delayed diagnoses—sometimes lasting up to a month and a half—as a significant barrier to specialized treatment.

To address these needs, AMANC has launched various support initiatives. In Veracruz, the organization is hosting the 14th “Corriendo por la Vida” race to fund transportation, food, and lodging for 178 families. Additionally, in Michoacán, AMANC is collaborating with the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH) for a blood donation campaign titled “Juntos somos más fuertes que el cáncer” to assist children and adolescents undergoing treatment.
